Search Engine Marketing companies are plenty, but how do you "the client" know that you are getting what you are paying for?
An SEO contract is a good place to start, scrutinize your contract and the SEO offerings made to you. Keep in touch with your Search Engine Marketing Company, up to date information about your contact details are important for them to keep in contact with you.
You are getting your SEO Marketing report on a monthly basis, but are you getting only a report or is there actual SEO work being done on your website? Telling the difference is not as difficult as you might suspect. By simply looking at your reports you can tell if you are being taken for a ride by your Search Engine Marketing Company or not.
Here are some things that you must also keep in mind when it comes to your SEO and the results there of.
Many times clients find that they are not seeing the same results as their Search Engine Marketing Company sees and therefore immediately feel cheated. But before you make any hasty assumptions there are a few things that you can look at.
- Your web history: Personalized search results used particularly by Search Engines such as Google and Bing. Your search results are based upon the searches that you regularly make, websites you visit and clicks. Therefore your search results are influenced by default, unless you change it. How to avoid this: Sign out of all your accounts (e.g. Gmail, etc.) clear browser cookies and perform the search again.
- Location Searching: Search Engines adjust your results based on where you are searching from (location) - they know this because of your IP address. How to avoid this: Make it seem like you are browsing from a different location to Search Engines by using a special proxy or Google Adwords Ad Preview.
- SEO Reporting: Are you looking at your report through the eyes of the client or that of your Search Engine Marketing Company? To explain: Your SEO Company sends you a report that states you are listed second for the search term “fairies” - you are curious and do a search yourself but find that you are listed in fourth position.
Universal search results can be divided into two - 1. All search Results or 2. Just Images. Search Engines scatter search results with search results that also include Videos, Images, News and Google Places - calling it Universal Search. The Answer: From the search results that you found you can now exclude Google Places, and then you will find that you are indeed being ranked in the second position of search results for that specific term.
